We divide the preschool class into smaller learning groups in the morning. Each group follows a similar, but slightly different daily lesson plan. The lesson plans are individually crafted and are based on weekly themes as outlined in our Multicultural Curriculum. Our goal is to provide a stimulating, age-appropriate learning atmosphere which fosters the overall development of each child.



Sample Lesson Plan: Friendship

 Monday
Lady Bug Group (tentow brumushi gumi) Read: "The Giving Tree." Discuss friendship. Make a Valentine’s heart wreath.
Butterfly Group (cho cho gumi) Read: "Friends." Make a Valentine Chain of friends.
Beetles Group (kabuto mushi gumi) Read: "Dinofours, I’m Not Your Friend." Make a Valentine’s Day card for a friend.
Firefly Group (hotaru gumi) Talk about friendship. Read: "The Big Bad Bully Bear." Draw a picture for a friend.
Dragonfly Group (tombo gumi) Talk about what they like to do with their friends. Make a bracelet for a friend.
Bumble Bee Group (hachi gumi) Read: "Dinofours, I’m Not Your Friend." Make a Valentine’s Day card for a friend.
Grasshopper Group (batta gumi) Talk about friends and how we can be good friends to each other. Make a Valentine’s heart and friends collage.
 Tuesday
All Groups Japanese Lesson: Tomodachi Ningyo (friendship dolls).
 Wednesday
All Groups Field Trip to Layfayette Park.
 Thursday
Lady Bug Group (tentow brumushi gumi) Read "Dinofours, I’m Not Your Friend." Discuss how we can be good friends to each other. Draw a picture for a friend.
Butterfly Group (cho cho gumi) Talk about what they like to do with their friends. Make a necklace for a friend.
Beetles Group (kabuto mushi gumi) Draw a self portrait. Discuss friendship and how we can be good friends to each other. Draw a picture for a friend.
Firefly Group (hotaru gumi) Read: "Dinofours, I’m Not Your Friend." Make a Valentine’s Day card for a friend.
Dragonfly Group (tombo gumi) Read: "Friends." Start on making a red heart mobile.
Bumble Bee Group (hachi gumi) Talk about friendship. Read: "Lester Clyde." Do a puzzle with a friend.
Grasshopper Group (batta gumi) Read: "Exactly Like Me." Draw a self portrait of our face.
 Friday
Lady Bug Group (tentow brumushi gumi) Talk about what they like to do with their friends. Make a bracelet for a friend.
Butterfly Group (cho cho gumi) Read: "Big Friend, Little Friend." Play Word Bingo and help each other out.
Beetles Group (kabuto mushi gumi) Make a monkey headband and play a game as a group. Learn about cooperative play.
Firefly Group (hotaru gumi) Learn about cooperative play. Make a large group rainbow together. Review colors.
Dragonfly Group (tombo gumi) Finish making the heart mobile. Draw a picture for a friend.
Bumble Bee Group (hachi gumi) Review facial parts in English and in Japanese. Make a friends face.
Grasshopper Group (batta gumi) Read: "Dinofours, I’m Not Your Friend." Make a Valentine’s Day card for a friend.

Sample Lesson Plan: Transportation - Air, Water, Land

 Monday
Lady Bug Group (tentow brumushi gumi) Introduce Hyacinth bulb. Read book and plant bulb.
Butterfly Group (cho cho gumi) Talk about transportation. Make a train. Read "Tootle."
Beetles Group (kabuto mushi gumi) Introduce and talk about transportation. What kind of transportation? Make a traffic light and play with a toy car
Firefly Group (hotaru gumi) Read book on transportation. Classify various forms of transportation.
Dragonfly Group (tombo gumi) Talk about different types of transportation that go on the road, sky or water. Paint.
Bumble Bee Group (hachi gumi) Talk about their weekend. Paint paper using different transportation toys. Discuss where these are found.
Grasshopper Group (batta gumi) Talk about their weekend. Read story "Trucks." Sort various vehicles by color and classify where you can find them.
 Tuesday
All Groups Japanese Lesson: Kiku (Chrysanthemums)
 Wednesday
All Groups Field Trip to Rossi Park.
 Thursday
Lady Bug Group (tentow brumushi gumi) Introduce the train. Make a train using shapes.
Butterfly Group (cho cho gumi) Start to make an airplane using paper mache.
Beetles Group (kabuto mushi gumi) Make an airplane. Talk about airplanes.
Firefly Group (hotaru gumi) Review the letter "A" for airplane. Talk about the airplane. Make an airplane.
Dragonfly Group (tombo gumi) Read story "Sail Away Donald Crews." Make a sailboat.
Bumble Bee Group (hachi gumi) Read "School Bus." Review colors and make a school bus.
Grasshopper Group (batta gumi) Make a "Transportation" head band. Read "Busy Wheels."
 Friday
Lady Bug Group (tentow brumushi gumi) Draw a self portrait. Read "Busy Wheels."
Butterfly Group (cho cho gumi) Finish the airplane. Read "Angela's Airplane."
Beetles Group (kabuto mushi gumi) Make a number train. Number recognition. Talk and think about how a train works.
Firefly Group (hotaru gumi) Review the letter "B" for boat. Talk about boats. Make a boat.
Dragonfly Group (tombo gumi) Cooking hot dog hot rods. Cutting vegetables. Review shapes.
Bumble Bee Group (hachi gumi) Cooking. Discuss the vegetables. Make a train with various vegetables.
Grasshopper Group (batta gumi) Painting. Use vehicle wheels to make a "track" collage.

Sample Lesson Plan: Theme of African American Culture

 Monday
Lady Bug Group (tentow brumushi gumi) Introduce the African American culture. Read: "Osa’s Pride." Draw picture about the story.
Butterfly Group (cho cho gumi) Read "Aunt Flossie’s Hats" and begin to make our own hats.
Beetles Group (kabuto mushi gumi) Read "SAM." Talk about friendship. Make a friend mural tree. Draw a face and exchange it with a friend. Place it on the tree.
Firefly Group (hotaru gumi) Introduce the African American culture. Make paper beads for a necklace.
Dragonfly Group (tombo gumi) Introduce the African American culture. Make paper beads for a necklace.
Bumble Bee Group (hachi gumi) Talk about various fruits and their origins, colors, etc. Make banana smoothies with yogurt.
Grasshopper Group (batta gumi) Discuss their weekend and the origin of a traffic light. Review the colors: red, yellow and green. Make a traffic signal light.
 Tuesday
Lady Bug Group (tentow brumushi gumi) Read: "Peanut butter Jelly Jelly." Discuss the ingredients and make homemade peanut butter.
Butterfly Group (cho cho gumi) Finish decorating and painting our hats from Monday.
Beetles Group (kabuto mushi gumi) Make paper beads to create a necklace.
Firefly Group (hotaru gumi) Read: "The Talking Cloth." Make a paper quilt.
Dragonfly Group (tombo gumi) Read: "The Talking Cloth." Make a paper quilt.
Bumble Bee Group (hachi gumi) Review the colors yellow and green. Discuss the features of corn and make a picture of corn using corn kernels and tissue paper.
Grasshopper Group (batta gumi) Read: "She Comes Bringing That." Review primary and secondary colors and make a multi-colored quilt.

 Thursday
Lady Bug Group (tentow brumushi gumi) Play the game "I Spy."
Butterfly Group (cho cho gumi) Talk about various fruits and their origins, colors, etc. Make banana smoothies.
Beetles Group (kabuto mushi gumi) Draw a self portrait. Discuss the ingredients and make homemade peanut butter. Also discuss the origin of peanuts.
Firefly Group (hotaru gumi) Draw a self portrait. Review numbers in English and Chinese, and introduce counting in Swahili.
Dragonfly Group (tombo gumi) Draw a self portrait. Review numbers in English and Chinese, and introduce counting in Swahili.
Bumble Bee Group (hachi gumi) Read: "The Talking Cloth." Make a paper quilt.
Grasshopper Group (batta gumi) Science: Talk about volcanoes and the ingredients for the project, "Volcano in a bottle."
 Friday
All Groups Japanese Lesson: Make Hinamatsuri dolls to celebrate the doll festival.
